Ski Trip Packing List: Everything to Bring (and Rent)
By Justin McKelvey · Updated
Short answer: pack your layers (base, mid, shell), ski socks, gloves, goggles, helmet if you own one, sunscreen, and your pass or tickets. Rent skis and boots at the resort unless you ski often, and carry your boots on the plane if you own them, since they're the hardest thing to replace.
On the mountain
- Ski jacket and ski pants or bibs (waterproof)
- 2–3 base layer tops and bottoms (merino or synthetic)
- 1–2 mid layers (fleece or light puffy)
- Ski socks, one pair per ski day
- Waterproof gloves or mittens, plus thin liner gloves
- Goggles (and a low-light lens if you have one)
- Helmet (or plan to rent one)
- Neck gaiter or balaclava
- Sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, and sunglasses for the base area
- Small backpack or jacket pocket kit: snacks, phone, charger, hand warmers
Gear: pack or rent?
- Boots: if you own boots that fit, bring them as carry-on. Good boot fit matters more than skis.
- Skis or snowboard: renting saves airline fees and lets you match the gear to conditions, such as wider skis on a powder week. See should you rent or buy skis.
- Reserve rentals ahead on busy weekends and holidays. Many shops discount online bookings.
Off the mountain
- Warm, waterproof winter boots with good tread for icy sidewalks
- Warm hat, casual layers, and a swimsuit if your lodging has a hot tub
- Moisturizer and a refillable water bottle; mountain air is dry and altitude dehydrates you
- Any medications, including something for altitude headaches if you're prone to them
Documents and logistics
- Lift pass, pass reservation confirmations, or e-tickets
- Driver's license and rental car confirmation (4WD or AWD for mountain roads in winter)
- Passport if crossing between the US and Canada
- Travel insurance details
Check the forecast the week before
A big storm changes what you need: a low-light goggle lens, wider rental skis, and extra time for mountain roads. Snow Way shows the 7-day snow forecast for every resort; if you're flexible, here's where it's snowing this week.
FAQ
What should I not forget on a ski trip?
Goggles, waterproof gloves, ski socks, sunscreen, and your lift pass or reservations are the most commonly forgotten items, and all are expensive to buy at the resort.
Should I bring my own skis on a plane?
Bring your boots if they fit well, but consider renting skis. Renting avoids baggage fees and lets you pick skis that suit the week's conditions.
How many ski socks should I pack?
One pair per ski day is ideal so you always start with dry socks; at minimum, bring enough to rotate and dry them overnight.
